It took a few tries to come up with a design that I liked, but it was worth the struggle

The first time I made My Happy Little Pill I made two separate pieces and I sewed them together in the center. There are a lot of abbreviations and acronyms in the world of crochet. It can be a little confusing until you get used to the lingo. Here are is a list I have created over the years to help keep them all straight, until I started to get a little more fluent in the language of crochet.

What are some abbreviations or acronyms you use or have seen? What is your favorite of the list? Mine is "frog" That one had me stumped for quite some time. "Frog", the action of ripping a portion (or a whole project) apart...."rip it, rip it" (ribbit, ribbit). Get it? Ha! It's still funny to me!

Common Crochet Abbreviations

r=round or row, depending on the type of project

st=stitch

sl-st=slip stitch

Read more »Swirls and Sprinkleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05762877064911497393noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1997000425542352240.post-44701378531743709312013-12-10T10:37:00.001-06:002013-12-10T11:17:20.548-06:00Winterberry Headwrap.I love this headwrap. It works up in about 30 minutes (depending on how fast you crochet). It is made with Homespun yarn, so it feels nice and warm. For this pattern I dropped a couple hook sizes, from what I usually work with for this yarn, to give a bit of a warmer/tighter stitch.

Have you tried using Lion Brand Homespun? Did you find that you didn't like working with it? It is a very common complaint, not finding it easy to work with. I, too, use to avoid homespun. The secret for me was to work with a large hook. I found that working with an N hook made it easier to get use to. For me, I wasn't able to really see the top of my stitches and it would frustrate me. Now, I find myself gravitating towards Homespun more than anything else, especially in the colder weather.

I promise, it gets easier! Give it another try! My Cozy Cowl Pattern
is a great easy pattern to give Homespun another go! My Cozy Cowl Pattern calls for Homespun and an N hook.

Ok, now for the Winterberry Headwrap pattern. :) This headwrap is "one size fits most". It fits both me and my 4 year old very comfortably! When I finished the headwrap, I decided it needed something, so I made one of my 3 layer flowers to attach.
I noticed that it was buttoned, rather than sewn secure. It dawned on me that the "shrug" could be worn multiple ways. I thought about it and thought it would make a fun project to figure out.
The stitch I used is similar to a stitch I saw on a friends baby blanket. The stitch looks like the crosshatch stitch, or diagonal box stitch, though I did mine differently. I just went from memory of what the stitch looked like and came up with a way to duplicate it.
Here is a close up of the stitch:
I think it is still my favorite hat to make and wear. I will be making a few new ones this year. I have the pattern listed as child 3-10, though the hat easily fits me, as well. Really I think it's more of a one size fits most. Gotta love a mostly universal pattern! :)
A crochet item that my daughter is actually wearing!!! She is loving her new shrug. The shrug is a great alternative to a jacket on those slightly chilly days.
I actually made this for my daughter in the early spring. Going off of memory, I think it took only 1 skein of yarn. (98% sure) I love one skein wonders!

Snug as a bug in her shrug.

This shrug pattern is written for a child size. The arms are wide because my daughter doesn't like anything to tug on her shirt. The arm width is actually a decent size for an adult. The pattern is very easily converted to any size, just keep crocheting until the piece is the length that you need, to go across the arms and back.

There is nothing that I love more than a super simple crochet pattern. This pattern is exactly that.
I made this cowl with Homespun yarn. It is also extra wide, so when it is worn as a cowl it is super cozy and it is wide enough to pull over your head.

Cowl worn like a hood.

It not only fits my daughter, but it also fits me. Guess that is something else that I love, a pattern that is versatile enough to work for almost everybody!
Ok, onto the pattern.
I just love how it turned out. It is so warm and cozy! This would make a great Christmas gift!
I used Yarn Bee Fleece Lite in Rustica. The color is amazing and I love the feel of the yarn. It works up really well.
I think I am going to have to make a second one because both me AND my daughter are going to want to wear it...once it finally cools down!
Until now, I had never made anything using broomstick lace. I decided to give it a try and came up with these:

Broomstick Lace Fingerless Gloves

Something I realized while trying to learn the stitch is that there are multiple ways people make the stitch. I found youtube videos with working your piece with the RS (right side) facing at all times, working right to left, then left to right. I found vidoes with turning after each row...both give a similar look, though I prefer keeping the RS facing at all times. It gives a smoother more uniform look (IMO). Some have you work in both loops of the stitch, some have you work in the BLO (back loop only).

I found while creating this pattern that I had some choices to make. Choice one, I could work around my piece right to left, then work back left to right, or I could work my piece in a continuous round right to left. I chose the latter. I found it to feel more natural, though both ways give the same overall look. Choice two, I could work in both loops of the stitch, or I could work in the BLO, I chose both loops.

If you are familiar with the stitch, go with what you feel comfortable with. If you have never used this stitch, I would highly suggest taking a look at this video tutorial by Moogly, so you can at least get an idea for what each step will look.

I did take some extra photos trying to show some steps of the stitch. I hope you find them helpful!

Are you ready? Ok, here we go...
The bags themselves work up in about 15 minutes, so this is a quick crochet project. They take a little longer to finish if you want to add embellishments. (like the ghost face or vine)
As Halloween gets closer, I am going to put a little treat in the bags for my kids and hang the bags on their doorknobs, for a little sweet surprise.
Once I know how many kids are in my son's class, at school, I am going to make a bunch of the pumpkins for their Halloween party. :)
I don't know what took me so long to think of it. If you have made anything with the granny stitch, you are going to find this a breeze to make. I have a feeling that this is going to get a lot of wear, once the weather cools down, of course.
I'd say that this pattern size is written for 3-5 years. The pattern can be easily adjusted, though. The collar of the poncho can be made larger or smaller by adding or subtracting from your beginning chain. Of course the length is easily adjusted by adding or subtracting rounds.
Maybe that fact will make it easier to crochet in 100+ degree temps.
In celebration of Autumn's return being just around the corner, I made something pumpkin themed. :)
This Tissue Box Kozie works up really quickly. It is a great item for decorating your desk without taking up any extra space.
It doesn't happen to me very often, I can usually talk myself down from it, but not yesterday. I am walking down a yarn isle, looking for yarn for a future project, when these vibrant colors catch my eye. Without thinking, I put the yarn in my basket and continued on my way.
What ended up in my cart was Yarn Bee Aurora Borealis Twist in Fruit Punch. Even the name sounds fun!
These pictures don't do the colors justice. It was hard to get my daughter to stay still for the pictures. She was much more interested in playing!

I wasn't sure what I was going to do with it at first, but it hit me this morning....I'll make a wrap for my daughter!
I sat down with my hook and had this wrap finished in less than an hour!
Are you looking for something to make for Mother's Day? What about a "pamper yourself" gift, or "New Mommy" package? These crocheted washcloths would be a great addition!

The washcloths measure between 8-9 inches square. It will depend on your tension. The patterns are easily adjusted. If you would like them a little larger, you could increase your hook size or add a few beginning chains.
Each washcloth has a different texture and stitch pattern. I really enjoyed working these up.

This first pattern is for a hdc v-stitch washcloth.
They use them every time we have ice pops. (which is A LOT, during the Summer) I love them because I no longer hear about cold fingers. Win-win.
These are quick and easy to crochet up and the pattern is really simple.
I have been making and selling these Kozies since I first learned how to crochet. We probably have about 15-20 of them scattered though out the house. :)
I have found that these Kozies fit well over a frozen go-gurt tube, too. Another Summer snack staple, around here.
I know it took a while to get this finished. I thought I would have been able to crochet this up sooner, but between wip's and family, it took some time. Thanks for being so patient with me and understanding. :)
I don't know that all the letters will actually be posted in alphabetical order, but the first batch is. :)
These patters are for crochet afghan letter blocks A, B, C, D, and E. L was already posted here.
These letter blocks work up in about 30 minutes and measure approx 6 inches (before a border). If you are making a blanket with them I would highly suggest you border them with a sc around, to make joining easier and cleaner.
I can't wait to make a crochet blanket with these blocks/squares!
Letter F, G, H, I, and J blocks/square patterns can be found HERE!
I am going to hang the blocks in their bedrooms. I think they turned out really well. :)
Here are a couple of pictures

Blocks in progress

Finished blocks (Thunder Up!)

Before the borders, the blocks measure 6 inches. To border my daughter's, I did a sc around and then shells. For my son's I did a sc and then rev-sc.
They work up pretty quickly and the project possibilities are endless. Wall hangings, blankets, bags, banners...
I am so happy with how the blocks turned out that I am going to work up patterns for the whole alphabet. :) I am going to start with the letter L. It is simple and quick. I would LOVE LOVE LOVE some feedback about the pattern and how your blocks turn out.
I plan on posting about 5-6 letters at a time. I am working on the written patters for a couple more letters and should have the first batch ready this week. :)
